Resetting Your Nanoleaf Elements

Sometimes your tech needs a quick reset—even though it’s not always going to be the solution, it’s still a good start! There are two different ways to reset your Nanoleaf Elements: a Soft Reset and a Hard Reset, the major difference being how much data is erased.

PRO TIP: Before restarting your Elements panels, ensure your panels are updated to Firmware 3.1.0+ and your Nanoleaf App is updated to version 3.4+ for iOS & Android

Soft Reset

This will reset the Wi-Fi and all saved pairing configurations. All of your saved Scenes will remain.

  1. Press and hold the Power and Brighten buttons together on the Controller for 15 seconds.
  2. Let go once the Status LED starts flashing.
  3. Wait for the Power button LED to remain on and steady.
  4. On the Nanoleaf App, delete the previous device and re-pair it again.

Hard Reset

This one is more comprehensive than a soft reset! It will reset your Elements to factory settings, delete Wi-Fi settings, pairing information, and saved Scenes. But don’t worry, your default Scenes and settings will still be restored!

  1. Unplug your Elements from the power source.
  2. While holding the Power and Brighten Buttons, plug the Power Supply back into power.
  3. Continue holding the buttons down until the button LEDs on the Controller come on.
  4. Once the LEDs come on, quickly release the buttons. The LEDs will flash to indicate that the hard reset will now take place.
  5. Wait about two minutes for a reboot. The Elements are ready to be set up once the Power Button LED turns on and the panels begin cycling through different colors.

Quick Tip For Restoring Your Scenes

Restoring your beloved saved Scenes is possible as long as your panels are updated to Firmware 3.1.0+ and your Nanoleaf App is updated to version 3.4+ for iOS & Android.

  1. Open the Nanoleaf App.
  2. Login to your Nanoleaf Account.
  3. In the Dashboard tab, select the Settings icon.
  4. Under SYSTEM > BACKUP AND RESTORE, ensure that DEVICE SYNC is enabled.

Having issues pairing your Elements to your device? Don’t fret, we have a few solutions for you to try out!

  • Option A: Sometimes it’s a Router issue, so the first step is to check your Router’s settings. Here’s what to look for: 5 GHz networks do not support Nanoleaf products so make sure you’re connected to a 2.4 GHz network; also ensure multicast, IGMP, UPnP (if available) are enabled on your router settings.
  • Option B:  Try a Soft Reset, see how in the above section.
  • Option C: Try a Hard Reset if the Soft Reset one did not work, see how in the above section.

Have you checked your Wi-Fi? If you are having this issue then you should try some Wi-Fi Troubleshooting tricks. Plug your PSU into power. The Power button on the Controller will light up after 1 minute. The Status LED will indicate different courses of action:

If your Status LED is solid white, your Elements are ready to connect to your network.

  1. Make sure your mobile device Wi-Fi is on.
  2. Move your mobile device closer to your panels.
  3. Toggle the Wi-Fi on your mobile device off, then on.
  4. Try a Hard Reset, see how in the above section.

If your Status LED is flashing, your Wi-Fi is configured, but the panels cannot connect to the target network.

  1. Try to Power Cycle your Elements (unplug your PSU from power, then plug it back in).
  2. If your panels are paired on the Nanoleaf App, delete the device and re-pair them with the Standard Pairing Process.

If your Status LED is unlit, your Wi-Fi is configured and connected to your Router.

  1. Make sure your mobile device is on the same network.
  2. Toggle the Wi-Fi on your mobile device off, then on.

Now for the fun part: creating your own unique designs and finding the perfect place to install them! Pro Tip: we have tools you can use to help you do that, but it’s not just about how they look. The following tips can help your Nanoleaf Elements achieve the best wireless range & network reception.

  1. Place your Elements in an open area where there are less obstructions, such as large pieces of furniture or walls. You can see the detailed guide for ceiling installations here.
  2. Avoid placing your Elements behind furniture or inside cabinets.
  3. Don‘t place your Elements in areas surrounded by metal surfaces on three or more sides. This can cause signal issues.
  4. Try to place your Elements at least 25 feet (8 meters) away from any microwave oven, 2.4 GHz cordless phone, Wi-Fi devices, or other source of interference.
  5. Place your Elements as close to your Wi-Fi home router as possible. For best performance, keep the distance below 65 feet (20 meters) and have no more than one wall in between.

Tackling Larger Installations (22+ Panels)

Looking to create a massive Nanoleaf Elements set up for your space? Well, we also have some installation tips for an easier process! Power Supply distribution is going to be your first consideration, luckily you can activate Power Diagnostic Mode to help you manage.

PRO TIP: Each standard 42W PSU supports up to 22 Elements panels (2W per panel). Each Controller supports up to 80 hexagons. Adjust Your Power Supplies for Optimal Performance (use this PSU calculator to find out if you have everything you need).

Activate Power Diagnostic Mode

If you have more than 22 panels and/or multiple Controllers in your Elements setup, you should try to distribute power supplies across your layout evenly. Activating Power Diagnostic Mode will give you tips on where you can place your Power Supplies for optimal performance. You can also try this through the Elements Controller, the Nanoleaf App or through your iOS/Android device.

  1. Elements Controller: hold the Dim (–) and Brighten (+) buttons down together for 5s. You will then activate Power Diagnostic mode.
  2. Nanoleaf App: A color-coded map of your panels will appear in the App. The map will automatically update as you connect or move, power supply units within your setup.
  3. Your Device:
    • For iOS Devices
      • Open the MORE menu.
      • Select SETTINGS > WARNINGS > Power Limited
    • For Android Devices
      • Open the side menu.
      • Select SETTINGS > WARNINGS > Power Limited

Distribute Power Supply

The lights are your friends! Pay attention to what they are saying to you in color code:

  • Green: Power Supply is in good placement.
  • Blue: Number of missing Power Supplies and the best places for those supplies.
  • White: Alternative place to add a Power Supply. The brighter the panel, the better the placement.

PRO TIP: Each standard 42W PSU supports up to 21 Elements (2W per panel). Each Controller supports up to 500 Elements. The Controller and PSU can be connected to any panel.

Convenient Ways to Control Your Setup

Elements Controller

The Controller is also the brain of the Nanoleaf Elements! With the Controller buttons, you can easily control your lights and access convenient shortcuts to common commands. You can also attach your Controller to any available linker slot in your layout. Here’s what you can do with the Controller buttons:

  • Dashboard: Choose an existing Scene or create your own with the Scene Creator (Static, Dynamic, Rhythm, Group, Layered). You can also use the Paint Tool to paint panels individually.
  • Discover: Find and download new Scenes created by the Nanoleaf community.
Explore: Find helpful information including tutorials, new device features, etc.
  • Schedules: Automate your Scenes to turn on or off.

Touch Gestures can be used to change brightness, Scenes or turn your Elements on and off. Find more about this function here.
